Racking for San Diego warehouses

San Diego warehousing is shaped by the border. Otay Mesa is the largest commercial border crossing complex in California, and much of the space there serves manufacturing plants in Tijuana: medical devices, electronics, automotive, food and beverage, e-commerce and more. Goods cross both ways, so one building often stages inbound components and outbound product at once.

That is a high SKU count against low case volume per SKU. Component and kit storage does not want depth, it wants faces, so we run single-deep selective rack with the bottom two levels given to hand picking, either carton flow lanes or a decked pick shelf, and full pallets in reserve above. Beam pitch comes in tight at the pick face and opens up higher, because a case pick needs reach and a reserve pallet needs clearance. Two-way flow also means two staging footprints and an aisle plan that keeps inbound and outbound apart at the dock.

Commodity class matters more than height in this market. Cartoned electronics and medical devices carry a lot of Group A plastic, and a high-hazard commodity changes what the sprinklers must cover at a lower stored height than ordinary goods. So we settle what is going on the rack before setting a top-of-storage elevation, because the class decides whether the layout you want is one the building can protect. Finding that out after the steel is up is expensive.

We handle both submittals, the city one and the fire one, so you are not at the counter.

Systems we install in San Diego

Selective pallet rack

Every pallet reachable from the aisle. The default where the SKU count is high and the pallet count per SKU is low.

Drive-in rack

Forklift drives into the lane. Highest density per square foot, LIFO rotation, one SKU per lane.

Push-back rack

Two to six pallets deep on nested carts. Density without giving up a lane per SKU.

Cantilever rack

Arms instead of beams, for pipe, lumber, tubing and anything that will not sit on a pallet.

Mezzanines

A second level built inside the building. Adds floor area for storage, picking or work space without moving.

Bulk storage and shelving

Hand-stacked cartons on boltless shelving, with wire decks or particleboard.

We also supply wire decks, conveyors, pallet jacks and more.

Rack inspections in San Diego

Forklift impact bends uprights, and a bent upright loses capacity long before it looks dangerous. We inspect racking against the manufacturer’s configuration, classify what we find by severity, and give you a written report.
