Racking for Long Beach warehouses
Long Beach warehousing runs on the port. Containers come off the terminal, travel a short distance, get stripped, and the freight is rebuilt onto domestic pallets bound inland. That is short-dwell work, and short dwell wants selectivity, not density.
So the default is single-deep selective rack, every pallet reachable on the first touch, with wide-span shelving or carton flow for freight that arrives floor-loaded and is sorted by hand. Deep-lane storage is wrong on a transload floor: a pallet that lands Monday is gone Thursday, and a half-empty drive-in lane loses more positions to honeycombing than the density returns. We set aisle widths to the truck actually on the floor, and would sooner lose a bay than leave a counterbalance forklift in an aisle drawn for a reach truck.
Import pallets are the detail that gets missed. A metric pallet off an ocean container does not sit on a frame the way a domestic 48 by 40 does, and the overhang either eats flue space or hangs into the aisle. We measure the pallet that actually arrives before choosing frame depth, and check weight per position, since a container packed to weight puts more in a bay than a mixed retail pallet.
Buildings near the port are older and tighter than the new inland boxes, so clear height and column spacing drive the layout more than floor area. Permits are part of the work here, city side and fire side, so nobody at your end has to chase them.
Systems we install in Long Beach
Selective pallet rack
Every pallet reachable from the aisle. The default where the SKU count is high and the pallet count per SKU is low.
Drive-in rack
Forklift drives into the lane. Highest density per square foot, LIFO rotation, one SKU per lane.
Push-back rack
Two to six pallets deep on nested carts. Density without giving up a lane per SKU.
Cantilever rack
Arms instead of beams, for pipe, lumber, tubing and anything that will not sit on a pallet.
Mezzanines
A second level built inside the building. Adds floor area for storage, picking or work space without moving.
Bulk storage and shelving
Hand-stacked cartons on boltless shelving, with wire decks or particleboard.
We also supply wire decks, conveyors, pallet jacks and more.
Rack inspections in Long Beach
Forklift impact bends uprights, and a bent upright loses capacity long before it looks dangerous. We inspect racking against the manufacturer’s configuration, classify what we find by severity, and give you a written report.
